Here is a funny story resurfacing over at Deadspin today. It seems Jonathan Papelbon and the Red Sox bullpen like the “moneyshots”.
The quick and “dirty” rundown:
A group of 40-year old Red Sox fans are planted in the seats above the Red Sox bullpen. One beer turns into twenty and suddenly one of the guys in the group is handing out pictures of him and his wife enjoying each other (wink wink). They do the noble thing and airplane one of the pictures into the Red Sox bullpen. The end result? The group gets an autographed ball from the bullpen and a nice “thank you”.
Here is an excerpt from the article.
“One of them gets the idea that the “moneyshot” picture should be shown to the players in the Red Sox bullpen. So he folds the picture and flicks it over the railing so that it lands in the steps of the bullpen. And that is when the party really started.Papelbon comes out of the dugout during the game holding the picture in his hand with a bemused face looking for the guy who threw the picture. The whole section starts buzzing with excitement and Papelbon and the “Hammer’s” friend who threw the picture start talking to each other. I cannot hear what was said, but during the next half-inning break, Papelbon emerges. The section goes nuts again and this time Papelbon signals to the “Hammer” to get ready to catch a pitch, and he throws a baseball to the “Hammer”. It was signed by the entire Red Sox bullpen, and they wrote “Thanks for the bullpen pics.”
Now I doubt that Deadspin put this article out there to take a shot at the Red Sox bullpen, but how thick is the irony here? The Red Sox bullpen can’t finish a game, or produce the “moneyshot”.
The Red Sox undoubtedly would be in a very comfortable lead right now if the bullpen could do it’s job. Where is the bullpen from 2007? I’d like them back please!

June 11th, 2008 at 9:31 amThis article is hilarious. You’re absolutely right though, the bullpen shouldn’t be accepting pictures of the “moneyshot” if they themselves cannot finish. Papelbon is going to be fine, I just wish I could be more sure about the rest of the bullpen.
